The Big Lick Ferret Shelter & Hospice is located in Roanoke, Virginia. We are a small group of volunteers dedicated to helping domestic ferrets by providing temporary respite to them while they wait for their forever homes. All ferrets under the care of the Big Lick Ferret Shelter & Hospice are ADV tested and vaccinated for rabies & distemper upon intake if medical records are not available. We also provide information to the public about the care of ferrets.
If a ferret is sick, veterinary care is provided before placement. If a ferrets' health or age does not allow for adoption, we care for that ferret until he or she crosses the Rainbow Bridge.

Director
My name is Debbie Saunders & the big boy in my arms is my Iggy Pop. He is one of my 14 personal ferrets & turned 3 years old in November '07. I was blessed with his adoption from Barb Clay at Rocky's in MD in 2005.
How did I get into ferret sheltering? Well, after getting my first two ferrets as a rescue in 2002 I searched the area and finding limited ferret information locally and no ferret club in the Roanoke Valley area, I decided to start the Star City Ferret Club in 2004. The Big Lick Ferret Shelter & Hospice was soon to follow. We started with a handful of local ferret enthusiasts, all of whom have been abundantly helpful in organizing the club & shelter and several have remained active in both to this day. Without their assistance the success of our current efforts would not have gotten to this point. I am eternally grateful for everybody's encouragement & efforts!

Secretary
Meet Jane Bradley. At the restructuring meeting Jane was elected as our group Secretary and has the formidable task of compiling our past meeting minutes & keeping the current ones up to date as well.
Jane & her husband Craig have many personal ferrets and regularly attend area ferret shows. She is seen here with one of her ribbon winning snuggle buddies, Benji.
Benji was a shelter baby from Rocky's Ferret Rescue & Shelter in MD run by Barb Clay.
Both Jane & Craig have been active members in the Star City Ferret Club and volunteers with the Big Lick Ferret Shelter & Hospice since day one. They also sit on the board of the Big Lick Ferret Shelter & Hospice.

Adoptions
Our adoption team consists of three great volunteers; Robyn Little, Todd Goodwin, & John Phelps. All have been with the Star City Ferret Club & the Big Lick Ferret Shelter for several years. They not only have adopted from the shelter, but they also foster for us.
We are working on pictures for these profile pages but haven't found those "perfect" ones just yet! Please check back for that update and then you can put names to faces.
To contact us for information about any of the ferrets in our care, please email us us.

Treasurer
Pictured here with Jane is her husband Craig Bradley.
Craig was one of our Ferret Whisperers and has been known to hold a wriggling ferret, gently petting it until it falls asleep in his arms, as the words, "I think this one needs to come home with us" softly float from his lips.
A while back he wasn't able to make it to one of the board meetings and was nominated as Chief Financial Officer and the vote was unanimous in favor. The group joke is; don't miss any board meetings, you never know what position you'll be nominated for and voted into in your absence!
Since then we've done some restructuring of the board and he is now our full time Treasurer, keeping our books straight and making sure we don't go into the red. He and Jane have been involved in the shelter operations from the beginning and he has been very instrumental in keeping all the financial records up to date, so the position truly suits him.
Craig & Jane both have an affinity for the special needs ferrets and have taken in many hospice ferrets. Knowing full well their time is limited they take them in to spend their final days in a loving home. Now that is true devotion!

Ferret Whisperers

Patrick Hallahan has the honor of being the second member of the Star City Ferret Club. He brings a ton of rescue experience to our group, having been a Firefighter and a member of one of the area rescue squads, still remaining active in the field as a trainer. Patrick has been rescuing ferrets since 1998. He has had difficult years losing several fur kids to the Rainbow Bridge. He is seen pictured here with Oliver, aka Big O, one of his adoptive fuzzies.
Patrick is also the Club Historian for the Star City Ferret Club. We expect good things from him! His love for ferrets is unmeasurable!
